Hepatitis A vaccine

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus.

The virus is spread in the faeces (poo) of an infected person. It's uncommon in the UK, but certain groups are at increased risk. This includes travellers to parts of the world with poor levels of sanitation, men who are sexual active with other men, and people who inject drugs.

Hepatitis A vaccination

Vaccination against Hepatitis A isn't routinely offered in the UK because the risk of infection is low for most people. It's only recommended for people at high risk including

  • men who are sexually active with other men
  • people who inject drugs

Please note Sandyford can only offer the vaccination to those who are at risk through sexual activity.

Required dosage of Hepatitis A vaccination

Hepatitis A vaccine usually consists of two doses over at least six months.

We usually give Hepatitis A vaccine in a combined vaccination along with Hepatitis B (where you will need three doses over at least 6 months)
