Menopause

Menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier.

While menopause is a natural part of life, it can come with its challenges. Our menopause service offers you specialised support to help you with these challenges.

Who this service is for

This service is for anyone living in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Argyll and Bute experiencing menopause who would benefit from specialist support for their symptoms. This includes people of all gender identities. We require a GP referral into this service so always speak to your GP about your symptoms first. This is because the majority of menopausal care, including HRT provision, is usually available from your GP practice.

Common menopause symptoms

Not everyone’s experience of menopause is the same, and you may have a number of symptoms or none at all. Common menopause symptoms can include things like:

  • Hot flushes
  • Sweats
  • Mood changes
  • Headaches
  • Joint aches

Read more about menopause and its symptoms on: NHS inform.

How to make an appointment

To access our specialist menopause service you need a referral from your GP.

Please speak to them about your symptoms in the first instance and they will make a referral if appropriate.

If you’re unsure who to contact you can check the NHS inform service directory.

What to expect

Coming to Sandyford

Location
Our menopause service is only available at Sandyford Central. There is lift access and the building is accessible. For directions and details, visit our Locations page

Arriving
When you arrive, go to the reception desk. It is through the main doors, down a small flight of stairs and to your right. There is a lift if you prefer.

Waiting area and facilities
You’ll wait in the main waiting area in front of reception. Bathrooms are available nearby, just ask a member of staff.

Attending with children policy
If possible, please avoid bringing children to your appointment unless someone can stay with them in the waiting area. Consultations may involve sensitive questions about your sexual history and could include procedures in a medical setting that are not safe for unsupervised children. If we’re unable to carry out your appointment safely, we won’t be able to proceed. Thank you for your understanding.

At your appointment

Your appointment space
A member of staff will then come to take you to your appointment. Our appointment rooms are all private spaces to ensure confidentiality.

During the appointment
We will give you an initial assessment to understand your needs and symptoms, and discuss available treatment options. Our care includes support for understanding and managing menopausal symptoms, both physical and emotional. At Sandyford you will always be given a confidential and supportive environment and you will be given the chance to ask any questions you might have.

Trainee members of staff
As a training centre, we may ask you if a trainee can sit in on your appointment. You will always be given the chance to say no to this request.

After your appointment

You will receive any results from any assessments or tests conducted during your appointment and we will explain any follow-up appointments or ongoing support that is needed. This usually includes information on how to manage your symptoms, other support available and may include a prescription for hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
