Who this service is for

Sandyford is the only NHS provider of abortion care for both Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Argyll and Bute.

This service is available to anyone living in these areas who is up to 20 weeks pregnant. If you are over 20 weeks pregnant please refer to the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS)

You don’t need to have made a decision before you talk to us about your options – we are happy to support you to make the best decision for you.

As there are more options available to you the earlier in your pregnancy you are, it is best to try contact us as soon as possible.

You may choose to continue with your pregnancy after talking with us. You only need to contact us again if you need to cancel an appointment. If you are choosing to continue your pregnancy, please consult guidance on NHS inform.

Types of abortion

There are 2 types of abortion. Which is best for you will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are and your health. We will always discuss the best option available to you and explain all details with you at your appointment.

Non-urgent advice: Medical: Uses medication

This involves you taking two sets of tablets at different times. If you are under 12 weeks pregnant you may be able to take one or both sets at home – this is known as Early Medical Abortion at Home (EMAH).

EMAH isn’t suitable for everyone. Occasionally, we may recommend you do the procedure in hospital or you may choose to be in hospital as a day patient.

Non-urgent advice: Surgical: A small operation

Surgical abortions involve removing the pregnancy through the cervix using gentle suction while you are under general anaesthetic (where you are asleep). The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes. Most people are able to go home the same day.

There is limited access to surgical terminations in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. We will discuss this if it is relevant to your care.

More information about each type of abortion can be found on: NHS Inform.

What to expect

At your initial assessment

When you contact us for an appointment our admin staff will ask you some basic questions about you and this current pregnancy.

When you contact us, you can choose:

  • Face-to-Face Assessment:
You’ll attend in person we will be able to provide an ultrasound scan and arrange a plan for your termination.
  • Telephone Assessment:
You’ll speak to a clinician by phone first. You may still be asked to come in for a face-to-face appointment if required.

You’ll receive the same care and support whichever option you choose.

You will receive a SMS message confirming your appointment and a link to information about terminations and contraception.

At your first consultation

This is a more detailed conversation, either over the phone or in-person. We’ll talk through your circumstances, offer support, and explain the next steps. You may be offered an ultrasound, STI testing, or a contraception discussion. We’ll also ask for your consent to proceed and give you time to ask questions or think things over. Everything is confidential and non-judgmental, and you can bring someone with you if you like.

If you are offered EMAH
If you’re eligible for Early Medical Abortion at Home (EMAH) we’ll provide a treatment pack with medication, instructions, and contact numbers. You may need to attend Sandyford for an ultrasound, blood test, or to collect your treatment pack. We recommend having someone with you for support when you complete the procedure at home. You’ll also be asked to do a follow-up test after three weeks to confirm the treatment worked. EMAH is only available if you’re under 12 weeks pregnant and meet certain health and safety criteria.

If you are having a medical abortion at hospital
If your abortion is taking place in hospital, we’ll first see you in clinic to complete forms and give you the first medication. You’ll then attend hospital for the second part of the treatment. You’ll be supported by staff throughout your stay, which usually lasts several hours. Occasionally, an overnight stay may be needed. We’ll give you all the information you need beforehand, and you’re welcome to bring someone with you for support.

If you are having a surgical abortion
For those having surgical abortions, we’ll arrange a pre-assessment at our clinic and refer you to a hospital service. We’ll support you through the process, including scans, tests, and paperwork. The hospital team will carry out the procedure and look after you during your stay. You’ll usually be able to go home the same day, and we’ll ensure you have all the information you need before your admission.

Coming to Sandyford

You’ll wait in the main waiting area in front of reception. Bathrooms are available nearby, just ask a member of staff.

Trainee members of staff
As a training centre, we may ask you if a trainee can sit in on your appointment. You will always be given the chance to say no to this request.

After your appointment

You may bleed for a few days or weeks after treatment. We’ll give you advice on what’s normal and when to seek help.

You’ll also be offered contraception to prevent future unplanned pregnancies – your fertility returns quickly, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Follow-up care is available if you have any concerns or symptoms, and we’ll provide contact details for support.
