Cervical Biopsy

    What is Cervical Biopsy?

You have had a small sample of tissue (a biopsy) taken from your cervix today. A biopsy is about the size of a pinhead. This will be sent to the lab for further tests. The result of the biopsy will show how abnormal the area is and if further treatment is needed

    After your Biopsy

    Result

Once your result is available you will receive a letter about it. If you require further treatment you will receive an appointment within 6-8 weeks.

    Pain

You may experience slight abdominal cramps for a couple of days. Take simple pain-killers like ibuprofen or paracetamol if required.

    Discharge and Bleeding

You may experience a dark-coloured discharge or slight bleeding for a couple of days until the biopsy site has healed.

If bleeding is excessive, for example soaking through sanitary towels, contact NHS 24 / or your local A&E.

A foul-smelling discharge is not normal. Please contact the Colposcopy Clinic or your GP for advice.
